Shithead, Palace, Karma, Shed: same game?
Verdict: yes, essentially. Shithead, Palace, Karma, Shed and China Hand are regional names for the same shedding game, each travelling with its own accent: different magic cards, different endgame etiquette, same three rows of cards and same walk of shame for the loser. Scandinavians will tell you, with some justice, that the whole family descends from Vändtia ("turn ten"), where the 10's burn was born.
| Name | Where you'll hear it | Usual magic cards | What the loser is called |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shithead | UK, Ireland, backpacker culture | 2, 8, 9, 10 | Shithead |
| Palace | US and some Commonwealth tables | Varies | Palace |
| Karma | App versions and online rooms | Varies | Karma |
| Shed | Politer households | Varies | Shed |
What actually differs
The skeleton never changes: dealt rows, climb the pile, pick it up when stuck, blind cards at the death. The flesh is negotiable, which is why this site exists. Whatever your table calls it, the rules will feel familiar and the house rules will handle the rest.
